Optical Ultrasound

An ocular ultrasound is a test used performed by ophthalmologists to create a detailed image of the eye and its orbit, also known as the eye socket.

WHO NEEDS IT

People suffering from a tumor that is affecting the eye, have a confirmed or suspected detached retina or those with a foreign substance lodged in their eye need an ocular ultrasound

This ultrasound is also done to diagnose or monitor glaucoma, cataracts and lens implants.

TESTING PROCESS

When the ophthalmologist is ready to perform the ultrasound, he will administer eye drops to numb the eye and minimize discomfort to the patient.

There are two parts to an ocular ultrasound.

In the first step, the A-Scan, eye measurements are taken and the second step, also known as the B-Scan details the back of the eye for the ophthalmologist.

Effects

The anesthetic administered via drops may cause some discomfort, but it will be slight and will diminish in a few hours.
