Cataract SURGERY

Cataract surgery is performed when the lens in the eye becomes cloudy due to deposits of protein or when lens tissue starts to break down and clump together,

The natural lens is replaced with a clear artificial one in a painless, quick surgery. The lens used is based on individual patients' needs, whether they want near or far ones or a combination of both.

We use Nidek-CV 9000 ophthalmic surgical system to perform Cataract surgeries which allows us to make the minimum size incision and reduces the chance of surgical complications.

At Chohan Eye Hospital, we offer same-day cataract surgery as a premium service.

SYMPTOMS

1. Cloudy , blurred or dim vision
2. Difficulty seeing at night
3. Sensitivity to light
4. Double Vision

about the surgery

The first step is a detailed eye examination by one of our qualified ophthalmologists and several tests to measure the shape and size of the patient’s eye to determine which lens implant will be most suitable.

Before the surgery, the doctor will administer medicines to numb the eye and dilate the pupil.

The doctor will then either break up the cloudy lens with with ultrasound waves or surgically remove the whole lens before implanting a new one made of plastic, silicone or acrylic.

If ultrasound waves are used, there will a couple of very small stitches to repair the incision but for removal of the lens, a bigger incision will be made.

Cataract surgery reduces risk of injury by about 40% due to better vision.

what you

need to know

Preparation

Patients due for cataracts surgery should avoid eating and drinking a few hours before the surgery.

Those that are taking medications for pre-existing health conditions or have some medical issues need to discuss them with the ophthalmologist and their physician. If blood thinners are taken regularly by the patient, they need to stop taking them a few days before the surgery.

The ophthalmologist may prescribe medications pre-surgery to minimize the risk of infections.

No cosmetics should be used the day of the surgery and patients should wear loose, comfortable clothing.

The patient should eat a light breakfast on the day of the surgery.

Care

Post cataract surgery, people can experience swollen eyes or slight inflammation which can cause discomfort and blurred vision.

Patients are required to rest for a couple of days. They should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting. Swimming and face washing should be avoided to reduce the risk of water borne infections.

They are also required to wear sunglasses during the day to protect their eyes from the glare until their ophthalmologist says its safe for them to be without.

To prevent excessive discomfort, medication is prescribed.

Right after the surgery, patients’ vision will be blurry but it improves slowly over the course of a few days, as will the intensity of colors seen.

Risks

Cataract surgery is considered a low-risk one. It is estimated that most of the population over 60 in the developed world will have had cataract surgery.

However, like with all medical procedures, cataract surgery too has some negative effects associated with it. These can include inflammation of the eyes, glaucoma, discomfort, retinal detachment or even detachment of the newly implanted lens. In extremely rare cases, it can lead to a permanent loss of vision.
