Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a genetic eye condition that develops when excess fluid builds up in the eye and creates pressure which damages the optic nerve.

It is common in people over the age of 60 and can lead to blindness if not diagnosed and treated in time. Regular eye exams after the age of 60 are recommended to detect glaucoma.

about the surgery

Glaucoma treatment can start with eye drops or oral medication to lower eye pressure.

However, surgery must be performed if the problem does not respond to medication or if it is urgent enough to require surgical intervention.

One of the non-invasive forms of treatment is laser surgery, where a beam is aimed to clear the blocked drainage areas. The eye is numbed an a lens is held in front to the eye to help aim the laser to the exact spot, which the patient will see as a bright flash of light

This is performed as an out-patient service and patients are sent home the same day. They can usually return to their regular routine the day after the surgery, but it takes a few weeks for success of the surgery to become obvious.

Where laser treatment is deemed insufficient or ineffective, an ophthalmologist may opt for surgery to either drain the fluid itself or insert implants that will unblock the drainage passage.

For these too the patient’s eyes are numbed, and they are usually sent home the same day.

80 million people in the world have glaucoma.

what you

need to know

Preparation

Glaucoma treatment requires a proper eye examination to map out the best way to treat individual cases.

If patients requiring glaucoma treatment are on blood thinners, they’ll need to stop taking those a few days before the procedure after discussions with their physician and ophthalmologist. This is also the case for any other medications taken.

Smokers too will need to quit smoking for a few days before and after the procedure.

Care

Medicines are prescribed to patients to reduce pain and discomfort and minimize the risk of infections.

Patients that undergo laser treatment for glaucoma can experience blurred vision for a short while after the procedure, but they recover quickly. However, they may need to be on long-term medication to keep the eye pressure normal.

Those patients that undergo a surgical procedure to drain the eye fluid and relieve pressure on the optic nerve will take a longer time to recover. They need to rest for a week and in this time the eye can be sore and watery. Patients are further advised not to bend or lift weights for four weeks after the surgery and they can experience blurry vision for up to six weeks.

Further patients who treat glaucoma with surgery may not need long term medication after the procedure.

Risks

Like all medical procedures, glaucoma treatment comes with risks.

After getting their glaucoma treated, patients can be at a higher risk for cataracts. They can also experience pain and redness in the eye, eye pressure that is still not optimal, infection and inflammation. In extreme cases, patients can lose their vision.
